Losing a blockade can still be fun.

Posted by Fannon in General News

I keep being told I haven’t updated this thingie, so update I will.

Two weekends ago (it was two, right?), we blockaded some island and lost. I don’t think anybody was terribly upset, and I certainly wasn’t terribly upset as I got a teddy bear from Avalon telling me I’m their most favoritest person ever.

Okay, they told me I’m their most favorite showoff ever. Half credit.

Anyway, this past weekend (as in yesterday), we blockaded some islands again. I was torn between Sound of Music and West Side Story for my DVD watching entertainment. Ever a democratic idealist, I left the choice up to the jobbers on my fine vessel, the Advanced Lamprey. (side note: At one point, I hopped off the ship, and promptly forgot where I was supposed to be. My jobbers took great joy in heckling me a few minutes later when the jobbing contact for Avalon instructed jobbers to please stay on the ships they were located. “She meant you, Fannon.”)

Anyway, as I was saying, I left the choice up to the jobbers, and they chose West Side Story over Sound of Music. Apparently a street war between the Sharks and the Jets (*snap* *snap*) is more inspiring than a nun taking care of seven children and later falling in love with their father, even if it does happen in the face of Nazi invasion.

At some point, I quoted one of the songs, and it stuck in my head, and seemed to fit our jobbers quite well. At least they all got a giggle when I said, “We’re disturbed, we’re disturbed, we’re the most disturbed, weeeee’re psychologically disturbed!”

Now what, you may ask, is the point of this entire story? Well, for the entire 8 block walk home I just had, I could think of nothing other than “We’re disturbed” and “Officer Krupky.”

And for that, I have you, the fine jobbers of the Advanced Lamprey, to thank.

As one of those heckling jobbers Fannon, I greatly enjoyed the blockade last week. A couple quick notes on my own experiences with West Side Story:

    1) In my high school’s production, the kid who played Riff had been hit by a car as a young kid–as a result, he was able to do some very unusual things with his legs. During the part when the Jets sang “We’re disturbed, we’re disturbed, etc.”, he would dance around like a maniac and actually kick himself in the head, which lent great creedance to his claims of being disturbed.

    2) That was the first production that I succesfully led a coup against a member of the production staff–I was part of the stage crew and effectively deposed the stage manager, who was incompetent. A couple years later, I did the same thing for a show in college, only I was the stage manager and overthrew the incompetent director…hmmm, I guess I’ll have to be on the lookout for incompetent royals!

Took me a while to look at comments…I was satisfied with FanFan’s posting. Completely unrelated to YPP or West Side Story, may I take a moment to object to the whole idea of a “coup” against a member of the production team on a show? As a working theatre professional, I find the whole idea repulsive (and Lubbs knows this…I was there for the collge incident). I’ve walked out on a production (effectively resigning) because I didn’t like the way it was being run, but “mutiny” just doesn’t sit well with me.

Personally, I’d rather take on more responsibility to make up for what the incompetant person lacks or else just leave them to their incompetance and move on. So I guess my approach to LL’s last statement would be different too. Heh.

I wonder what musical I should get for the next blockade?
